TALMAR Farm: Local, organic, therapeutic…always in season.

TALMAR (Therapeutic Alternatives of Maryland) is dedicated to the mission of enhancing health for all people of all ages and abilities.  TALMAR offers an innovative therapeutic environment providing work skills development, vocational, educational and recreational programming in horticulture and agriculture.  All programs are designed particularly for individuals with physical, mental and developmental challenges that impact their health and well-being.

TALMAR is grateful for its affiliation and partnership with Baltimore County Recreation and Parks

‘Tis the Season

‘Tis the Season for getting down and dirty (see what we did there?) at the farm. We have been working hard to get seedlings started and plants in the ground for the upcoming season.

We still have registration slots available for the 2019 CSA season, so don’t miss out on fresh veggies, eggs, and beautiful flowers! This season we are excited to offer a large variety of your favorite fresh produce and flowers, and even a few new selections sure to bring color, nutrients, and fun to your table.

TALMAR’s veteran training program is in full swing, with 13 military veterans learning vocational farming skills in a therapeutic setting.  The veterans come from a wide range of backgrounds and have a variety of interesting goals. While some are here to learn the skills necessary to start their own farms, some are looking to find employment in greenhouses or with sustainable landscaping companies. Others are most interested in increased self-sufficiency by learning to produce their own food, while others simply want the enjoyment of days spent making crops grow here at TALMAR.  One thing they all have in common is that TALMAR is lucky and happy to have them with us!

The veterans joined us back in mid-February, with a typical day consisting of classroom studies and caring for our hoop houses and greenhouse.  Time in the classroom meant discussions on topics such as soils and season extension , while greenhouse tasks included seeding transplants for the spring.  We have been fortunate enough to have some wonderful speakers join us, as well, allowing the veterans to learn more about urban farming and organic pest management.  In addition, we’d like to thank Veterans Compost for kindly giving us a tour of their wonderful facility.

Now that the weather is warmer, our veterans have hit the fields and planted cool season crops such as lettuce, spinach, carrots, and beets.  A big thank you to the hard-working CityFam volunteers who donated their time and hard work to help us out for a Saturday volunteer day! We are very grateful for all of your support.  The veteran farmers will be with us through the rest of the season, and we’re looking forward to many great harvests!

Last October, TALMAR (Therapeutic Alternatives of Maryland) marked its 20th year of operation!! Our farm provides the perfect environment to deliver programs using horticulture and agriculture, regardless of one’s physical, mental or developmental abilities.  Programs are distinct and are attended because of interest and/or need.
Whether to develop work skills, acquire vocational training to pursue a career in agri-business (sustainable agriculture, floriculture or greenhouse management) or to participate in horticultural activities as a rehabilitative tool (increase range of motion, balance and endurance), TALMAR offers a resource for many who seek an alternative to conventional forms of therapy, recreation or education.

In addition to our programming, we grow and sell produce, flowers, and herbs using organic practices. Our chickens are fed with a high-quality organic feed that produces eggs people rave about!

TALMAR acquired a farm manager that has ultimately turned our fields into a fine laid out carpet of our future harvests. Stop in to see what I mean!!  We offer a CSA for families who want to have weekly allocations of fresh (harvested that day), local and naturally grown OR come on Saturdays from 9-12 to our market.

We are open to the community and will be greeted by our veterans who participate in our vocational training program.

TALMAR offers memberships for individuals and families which give reduced cost incentives to our yearly list of workshops and events at our farm. Our workshops are educational and open to everyone in the community. Please go to our web site (www.talmar.org) to see the calendar of events. Members of TALMAR receive discounts for all produce and flowers sold at the farm or at our stand at the Towson farmers market on Thursdays.

As a non-profit, we greatly depend on volunteers to help us with the growing of plant material, either in the greenhouse or in the fields. Perhaps you might help us with our social media postings or to provide a leadership role as a member of our Board of Directors. Call our office at 410-825-2020 to inquire or download the volunteer application online to get started!

Also, your old gardening tools or equipment or vehicles (trucks, cars, tractors) or anything that you might want to donate, is tax-deductible. We have a wish list on our website– please check it out!

Thanks to each one of you for being a part of our farm at TALMAR. Whether a participant, a volunteer, an intern, a CSA member, or a person who shares our info with friends & family, we are grateful!
